"Are you paying attention? Ya, you."

Has anyone ever told you that you have the attention span of a 10 year old boy? If yes, let me apologize on their behalf. You may have taken it hard, but I'm sure it was said in love. If you do in fact have the attention span of a 10 year old boy, again, I'm sorry.
While I'm a couple of years beyond this, let me just paint the picture for you.
DAD: Hey son, it's time for bed. Please go brush your teeth and put on your PJ's.
SON: (no response)
DAD: (2 minutes later) Son? Did you hear me?
SON: Ya. I'm going.
DAD: (2 minutes later with no noticeable movement from son) Son? Are you going?
SON: Ya. I'm going.
DAD: (2 minutes later. Again, no noticeable movement from son) I want you to do it now.
SON: OK. (A positive sign. Angle of foot moves slightly to the northwest)
DAD: Your bedroom's over there, and the bathroom's just down the hall. Remember?
SON: Ya dad. (Now up off the couch and 4 steps closer to the television.)
DAD: Son, you've seen this commercial a hundred time. You can recite the script by rote. Move or... (mild threats follow)
Getting the picture? Frustrating or funny (depending on your mood at that moment), but what's this have to do with marketing?
"Are you paying attention? Ya you."
Niche, niche, niche, niche, niche. There's been so much focus on niche marketing in the last 6 months that I think those 5 little letters are permanently burned into my retinas. They show up in my mirror in the morning. They show up in my lemon bars when I'm quietly pigging out at 10:00 at night.
Niche marketing isn't a new idea, but it is something that deserves your attention if you're stuck in a rut and looking for a new adventure.
So, let me ask you... "Are you paying attention? Ya, you."
Make it a priority to pay attention to the hot topics in the news, on the TV, in the media, in your favorite magazines, in chatrooms and forums. If you decidedly open your eyes and turn on your cranial receptors, you'll probably find yourself saying "Hey! Here's a hot niche" on a daily basis.
Keep a list of your observations and ideas.
Keep a steno pad and pen on the passenger seat next to you in the car. Have your spouse, kids or significant other take dictation as you drive.
Use the voice notes feature on your cell phone or your PDA.
Dedicate one note pad on your desk to recording your hot niche observations and revisit it often.
One of my favorite magazines is Entrepreneur. Do you read this magazine? If you don't, seriously think about subscribing.
Go here: https://www.entrepreneur.com/subs/order?Key=ABR to check out their subscription deal. I was just on that page and they're offering a fr*e trial issue and a fr*e copy of the Entrepreneur Instant Start Up Guide (downloadable).
There has been a noticeable trend in Entrepreneur magazine over the last year to devoting more and more space to internet marketing and using the great www as an avenue to growth for brick and mortar businesses.
I want to share a few of what I suspect might be profitable growing niches based on articles, editorials or commentaries in Entrepreneur magazine.

~ All the Rage. Wondering what everyone will be crazy about in the coming year? Take a sneak peek at the hottest franchising trends for 2005. (lots and lots of topics listed)
~ and tons more can be found just by perusing the pages.
Do you ever pay attention to those little boxes that are set off the page? Here's the information from one on trends...

"Are you paying attention? Ya you." Good.
