DOEW!!! (sounds like dough, but more stupid) There's a really good lesson here that could save you a couple hours of frustration, not to mention a few handfuls of hair. DOEW!!! There's Homer again. Hey, it is my own voice. If you asked me why I'm making Homer noises, I'd have to plead the 5th. I was working on one particular web page where a particular script was doing something I'd never seen before. It should have been simple. I've built 100+ pages on this particular site (http://www.wareareyou.com) and was feeling somewhat high & mighty - like I could do this in my sleep, which I don't seem to get much of anymore. Try this... dang. How about that... nope. Jeeze! What's up with this page?! After 2 hours wasted one day, I'm beginning to feel like King whoever in the Bible's Old Testament. "And finding that his bu.y button would not work, Ron tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his button many days." Another hour the next day... I had an idea. Let's strip the page down to nothing but a bu.y button, upload it and see if it works. (Jeopardy theme in the background....) It works! I hate this bu.y button. Why? Why? Why? It's just simple source code, html tags, some CSS, a PHP script. Go look at this page: http://www.wareareyou.com/easy-pdf-ebook-software.htm (grab some fr.ee software while you're there) Pretty simple page right? A graphic here, some copy there, and a "Bu.y N0w!" button. Ah, that simple button. I hate that button. That button stole three hours of my life, and it's nothing but some simple stupid source code. I finally resolved to go back and build the page from scratch. One block at a time. Along I plod... copy this / paste that / test? / OK, it works / copy this / paste that / test? / OK, it works / and so the worker labors. The page was almost complete and every test worked, and then I got back to that bu.y button. How I hated that bu.y button. Hey, there's a form tag on the page. No. There are two form tags on the page! Two beginning. Two ending. Nested. Huh? I don't need form tags inside of form tags! Ya think that might present a problem? Sherlock Hutton. I plead the 5th, the 6th and the 7th too. Lesson learned: When you encounter a challenge as described above, tear it down into its most basic elements and test those elements individually. Build / test / build / test / build... You could easily save yourself a couple hours of frustration, and life will be good.
